Keratosis Pilaris

About this topic

Keratosis Pilaris is a common skin condition where a protein in your skin forms hard plugs where the hairs grow. This makes small bumps that may be white, skin colored, or slightly pink or red. ‚

What are the causes?

You have a protein in your skin called keratin. Most of the time, this protein flakes off of your skin. With this condition, the protein becomes hard and clogs the pores around where the tiny hairs on your skin grow. ‚

What can make this more likely to happen?

  • Having very dry skin
  • Eczema
  • Being female
  • Other people in your family with this condition
  • Cold weather

What are the main signs?

People with this condition often have small raised bumps that feel very rough. Each bump is small, about the size of a grain of sand. The bumps are often found on the backs of your arms, the front of your upper legs, or your back or chest. They may also be found on your butt or on your face. ‚

How does the doctor diagnose this health problem?

Your doctor will take your history and do an exam. The doctor will look at your skin with care and may not need to order any tests to diagnose this condition. ‚

How does the doctor treat this health problem?

The doctor will work with you to treat the rough bumps on your skin. Most often, the doctor will want you to keep your skin moist. You will need to use creams and ointments often to keep your skin hydrated. This will help your skin to look better. It may not make the bumps go away completely. ‚

What drugs may be needed?

The doctor may order drugs to: ‚
  • Soften and add moisture to your skin
