A prosthesis is a device that replaces a missing body part. It often replaces a missing arm, leg, or hand. Using a prosthesis may help you return to your daily activities. A specialist called a prosthetist will fit you and help you care for your prosthesis. ‚
General
Caring for Your Prosthesis ‚
- Clean the socket every day. Use a cloth with soap and water. Dry it well with a cloth.
- Check every day for cracks, breaks, or loose parts. If you find any damage, dont try to fix it yourself. Tell your prosthetist right away.
- Remove your prosthesis before you go to sleep.
- Wear clean dry socks.
- Keep your prosthesis away from hot or warm areas. Don't leave it in the sun or against a hot radiator.
- Call your prosthetist if you notice any changes in how the prosthesis fits.
Water and Your Prosthesis ‚
- Ask your prosthetist about taking a shower or swimming. You may need a special covering to use in water.
- If your prosthesis gets wet, dry it with a clean cloth. Be sure to dry any metal parts so they do not rust.
- Flush the prosthesis with fresh water if you get salt water on it. Rinse carefully and dry all parts. Be sure to bring it to your prosthetist for a checkup.
- If you have an electric or computer-controlled prosthesis, don't get it wet. If it gets wet, tell your prosthetist right away.
Skin Care ‚
- Wash your stump every day with soap and water. Make sure you rinse well and remove all of the soap. Pat your skin dry with a clean cloth towel.
- Ask your prosthetist before you use any creams or lotions.
- Check your stump every day for redness, blisters, soreness, or swelling. You may need to use a mirror to see all parts of your stump. If you find any problems, call your doctor.
What will the results be?
- Taking good care of your prosthesis will keep you from getting hurt and make sure it works properly.
Will there be any other care needed?
- Visit your prosthetist every 3 to 6 months.
- If you have any concerns or if there is any problem with your prosthesis, call your prosthetist right away.
