Why is this procedure done?

An ultrasound is done to see the organs and structures in your body. An ultrasound uses sound waves to make images or pictures. Doctors may order this test when you have signs like pain, swelling, or infection. It may help the doctor decide what is wrong. ‚
In the Emergency Unit, the doctors may use ultrasound to quickly look for bleeding or air in your chest, stomach, or around your heart. This test can be done at the same time as other lifesaving care is being given. ‚

What happens before the procedure?

For this kind of ultrasound you will have often been in an accident or have had a traumatic event like a fall or an assault. There will be nothing needed to prepare for the test. ‚

What happens during the procedure?

  • You will be lying in your bed. The technician will place a small amount of gel on your skin. It will help transmit sound waves inside your body.
  • The technician moves a probe over your skin. The probe puts out sound waves that bounce off your organs and the structures inside your body. A computer picks up the sound waves and changes them into pictures.
  • The doctor will be able to see the pictures on a screen beside your bed. Sometimes, the technician may press the probe more firmly to get a clearer view of an area. You may feel some discomfort. The technician may ask you to change positions or hold your breath for a few seconds.
  • The test takes about 10 to 20 minutes.

What happens after the procedure?

  • The technician will wipe off the gel. Your doctor will look at the pictures.
  • The results may show if there are any problems with the organs or structures in the area that was looked at. Your doctor will talk about the results with you.
  • You may need to have emergency care or surgery based on the test results.

What follow-up care is needed?

The results will help your doctor understand your signs. You may need other tests or procedures. ‚

What problems could happen?

Ultrasound tests do not cause any problems to your health. ‚
