What are the causes?


The position of your eyes may cause you to see double. Your brain may have trouble focusing the two images into one picture. There can also be a problem with the nerves and how they carry the messages from your eyes to your brain. Being very tired or having too much alcohol may cause short-term double vision. ‚  

What can make this more likely to happen?


  • Cataracts
  • Problems with your cornea or retina
  • Being nearsighted or farsighted
  • Eye muscle problems
  • Head injuries
  • Stroke, brain tumor, or other brain problem

What are the main signs?


  • You may have eyes that wander or each eye seems to look in a different direction.
  • Your eyes may be crossed and look in towards your nose.

How does the doctor diagnose this health problem?


Your doctor will ask you about your history and do an eye exam. Your doctor may a shine light in your eyes. The doctor will check your eyes to see how well they focus light. The doctor may need to put drops in your eyes during the testing. ‚  
The doctor may order: ‚  
  • Slit lamp exam
  • MRI or CT scan
  • Blood tests

How does the doctor treat this health problem?


Your care is based on what is causing your double vision. Your doctor may order special eye therapy to fix your eye movements. Other times, surgery is needed. Your doctor may want you to wear glasses, contact lenses, or an eye patch. ‚  

What drugs may be needed?


The doctor may order drugs to: ‚  
  • Relax the eye muscles
  • Blur the eyesight in one eye

What problems could happen?


  • Your eyesight could get worse.
  • You may have problems reading, driving, or playing sports.
  • You may need to have surgery.
