What are the main signs?
- Swelling or bulge behind the knee
- Pain behind the knee
- Knee feels tight or stiff
- Trouble bending knee or making it straight
- Feel like there is a water-filled balloon when you press on the back of your knee
How does the doctor diagnose this health problem?
The doctor may: ‚
- Feel the back of the knee to find where the problem is
- Have you bend and straighten your knee
- Push and pull on a few areas to check your motion and strength
- Shine a light on the cyst to see if it is filled with fluid. This is called transillumination.
Your doctor may order: ‚
- Ultrasound
- Arthrogram
- X-ray
- CT or MRI scan
How does the doctor treat this health problem?
If you are not having many problems because of the cyst, your doctor may not treat it. Your doctor may just watch it to see if it will go away on its own. If it is causing you problems, your doctor may suggest: ‚
- Treating the problem that is causing the cyst
- Rest
- Ice
- Keeping the leg raised
- Compression ¢ ˆ ’ An ACE wrap can be wrapped lightly around the injured area for support and to ease swelling.
- Brace or neoprene sleeve for support and swelling
- Using crutches, a walker, or a cane to take pressure off of the knee
- Exercises
- Physical therapy (PT)
- Draining fluid from the knee
- Surgery if there is a cartilage tear or if no other care helps the problem
What drugs may be needed?
The doctor may order drugs to: ‚
- Help with pain and swelling
- Fight an infection
The doctor may give you a shot of an anti-inflammatory drug called a corticosteroid. This will help with swelling. Talk with your doctor about the risks of this shot. ‚
