The cornea is the clear part on the front of the eye. It covers the colored part of the eye and the pupil. It keeps the front of the eyes safe. The cornea filters light going into the eye. Sometimes, your cornea is not shaped the right way. Then, the light that flows through the cornea becomes distorted. This may also happen if the lens in your eye is not shaped the right way. If the light does not flow through properly, your eyesight is blurry. ‚
Some people have this eye problem all by itself. Other people are also nearsighted or farsighted. You may need to wear glasses or contact lenses to be able to see more clearly. ‚
What are the causes?
You may be born with this eye condition. An eye injury or eye surgery may also cause it. ‚
What are the main signs?
- Blurred eyesight
- Eye strain
- Tiredness after doing something that causes you to have to focus your eyes a lot, like working on a computer or reading
- Headaches
How does the doctor diagnose this health problem?
Your doctor will take your history and do an exam. The doctor will also carefully check your eyes for problems seeing. Your doctor may: ‚
- Do a test to learn how well you can see.
- Measure the curve of your cornea.
- Use special tools to see how well your eyes reflect light.
- Look at your eyes using a special microscope.
How does the doctor treat this health problem?
You may need to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses to help you see more clearly. Sometimes, your doctor may be able to do laser surgery on your eyes to help your eyesight. This surgery uses a beam of light to fix the shape and curve of the cornea. ‚
What lifestyle changes are needed?
- You may have to limit your activities for a short time if you have problems seeing. You should be able to go back to your normal activities after you are able to see more clearly again.
- Visit your eye doctor each year to make sure your eye glasses or contact lenses are still right for your eyes.
Will there be any other care needed?
- Ask your doctor what you need to do when you go home. Make sure you understand everything the doctor says. This way you will know what you need to do.
- Ask your doctor if you need to wear your glasses or contacts all the time. You may only need them for certain activities like reading or driving.
What can be done to prevent this health problem?
Protect your eyes: ‚
- Wear safety goggles if you work with dust, fumes, or chemicals. They are also important for working with tools and machines.
- Wear sunglasses when going outdoors.
- Wear a helmet with an eyeshield when traveling by motorcycle.
- Use goggles or a visor when playing sports.
