Active range of motion, or AROM, is a type of exercise done to: ‚
- Reduce stiffness in joints
- Keep your muscles strong and flexible
- Help you heal faster after an injury or surgery
- Help increase blood flow to a body part
- Help make your daily activities easier to do
General
These exercises should be done slowly. If you have any sharp pains, stop right away. Use good posture when you sit to do these exercises. Do not hold your breath during these exercises. Do each exercise 10 times. Do all the exercises 2 to 3 times each day. ‚
Sit in a firm chair to do these exercises. ‚
- Knees:
- Bending ¢ ˆ ’ Lift your lower leg until your knee is straight. Now, bring it back to the floor and bend the knee as much as you can. Do this on your other leg.
- Ankles:
- Pumps ¢ ˆ ’ With your legs out straight, move your ankles up and down by bringing your toes towards your head and then pointing them down to the floor.
- Circles ¢ ˆ ’ Make circles with your ankles by moving your toes in one direction. Now, make circles in the other direction.
- Alphabet ¢ ˆ ’ Imagine you are writing the alphabet with your feet. Go through the alphabet with each foot, resting part way through if you get tired.
- Feet:
- Curls ¢ ˆ ’ Curl your toes up and down.

Talk to your doctor first to find out what exercises are safe for you. Ask for the help of a skilled trainer or therapist. They can set up a safe and effective exercise program for you. If you do not do exercises the right way, you could get an injury. ‚
Helpful tips
- Do all exercises slowly and smoothly.
- Try counting out loud when doing the exercise. This can help you to breathe regularly and keep you from holding your breath.
