Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the time leading up to a womans last period. Perimenopause is a slow change from a normal period to the time when the last period stops. All women go through this stage 2 to 10 years before periods fully stop. Perimenopause may start once a woman reaches the age of 40. Some women may start earlier while others start much later. ‚  

What are the causes?


Changes in hormone levels cause perimenopause. Before this time, your hormone levels go up and down in an even pattern. As you get older, your hormone levels change. Your hormones do not follow an even pattern. ‚  

What can make this more likely to happen?


Perimenopause is a normal time in a womans life. You are more likely to have perimenopause if you have been treated for cancer. If you have had a hysterectomy, you may be more at risk. If you are a smoker you may be at a higher risk. Some health treatments may also make perimenopause more likely. ‚  

What are the main signs?


  • Periods that are not on a normal cycle
  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Mood changes
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Problems with sleep
  • Bladder problems
  • Changes in feelings about sex
  • Weaker bones

How does the doctor diagnose this health problem?


Your doctor will do an exam and take your history. The doctor will ask you about your periods. Your doctor may do a pelvic exam. The doctor may order lab tests. ‚  

How does the doctor treat this health problem?


There is no cure for perimenopause. The goal of care is to control the signs. ‚  
The doctor may suggest endometrial ablation. Endometrial ablation is done to reduce heavy bleeding during periods. The doctor uses laser, heat, or electrical energy to remove the lining of the womb. ‚  

What lifestyle changes are needed?


  • Stay active and work out to keep your muscles strong and flexible.
  • Keep a healthy weight.
  • Avoid smoking.
  • Avoid beer, wine, and mixed drinks (alcohol). Avoid drinks with caffeine.
  • Learn how to manage stress. Learn ways to relax such as deep breathing and yoga.

What drugs may be needed?


The doctor may order drugs to: ‚  
  • Balance or replace hormones
  • Reduce hot flashes
  • Help with vaginal dryness
  • Ease heavy bleeding during periods

What can be done to prevent this health problem?


There is no known way to prevent perimenopause. ‚
