Moles on the Skin

About this topic

Moles are colored growths on the skin. They can happen anywhere on your body. Most moles are harmless and not cancer. But, it is possible that skin cancer will start as a mole. It is important to watch moles closely for any changes. ‚

What are the causes?

The cells that give color to your skin and hair are melanocytes. Moles develop when melanocytes grow in clusters or groups. ‚

What are the main signs?

  • Round or oval shape
  • One color, often brown
  • Flat or raised
  • Does not change over time

How does the doctor diagnose this health problem?

Normal moles should not cause any alarm. They are very common. The doctor will look at the mole and check it for changes. You may have a skin biopsy to check if the mole is cancer. In a skin biopsy, the doctor will take a skin sample from the mole or the whole mole and send it to a lab for testing. ‚
If you see any changes in your mole, call your doctor right away. ‚

How does the doctor treat this health problem?

  • Moles most often do not need any treatment. The doctor may remove a mole if it bothers you.
  • If the biopsy results show that the mole is cancer, the doctor will talk to you about treatment options.

If you need your mole removed, your doctor may: ‚
  • Cut out the mole and the skin around the mole. You may need sutures to close the wound.
  • Use a blade to shave off smaller moles.

Tell your doctor right away if a mole appears again after it was removed. ‚

Will there be any other care needed?

You should check your moles every month. Call the doctor if: ‚
  • The 2 halves of the mole do not look the same.
  • The edge of the mole is irregular or crooked.
  • The mole has many colors.
  • The mole is bigger than 6 mm or the size of a pencil eraser.
  • The mole looks different or grows bigger after time.
