Craniosynostosis

About this topic

Craniosynostosis is a condition where the bones in a babys head fuse together too soon. A baby's skull is made up of a few bones which fit together closely. Where 2 bones meet is called a cranial suture. Since the bones are not fully touching and hardened, a baby's skull can grow and change shapes as the baby's brain grows. In most cases, by the time a baby is 2 or 3 years old, all of the cranial sutures have closed. ‚
With craniosynostosis, one of more of the cranial sutures closes too early. Then, your baby's head may be shaped differently. There are a few kinds of craniosynostosis based on which cranial suture is affected. ‚
