joint. The "ball part of the joint is the top part of your upper arm bone. The "socket" part of your joint is in your shoulder blade. The socket is smaller than the large ball of the upper arm bone. This gives the shoulder joint a lot of motion but is not very stable. There is a ring of soft tissue around the socket. It is the glenoid labrum. This helps make the socket deeper so the ball of the shoulder joint will better stay in place. A labral tear of shoulder happens when the cartilage around the socket is torn. The tear may also involve other tendons. It may happen with a shoulder dislocation. ‚

What are the causes?
- Overuse or repeat motions

- Falling on an outstretched arm
- Sudden pulling motion from heavy lifting
- An overhead reach when trying to stop a fall or slide
- Shoulder is out of normal position or dislocated

What are the main signs?
- Pain is worse when reaching over the head
- Pain both during the day and at night
- Catching, locking, popping, or grinding
- Less motion in the shoulder
- Shoulder feels weak or unstable
How does the doctor diagnose this health problem?
The doctor will feel around your shoulder and arm to find where the pain is. Your doctor may move your arm and push or pull on your arm to check your motion and see how strong the muscles and joint are. The doctor may order: ‚
How does the doctor treat this health problem?
- Rest
- Ice
- Sling to keep your shoulder from moving
- Exercises
- Physical therapy (PT)
Are there other health problems to treat?
A tear of the glenoid labrum often happens with other injuries like a dislocated shoulder. ‚
What drugs may be needed?
The doctor may order drugs to: ‚
- Help with pain and swelling
What can be done to prevent this health problem?
- Stay active and work out to keep your muscles strong and flexible.
- Warm up slowly and stretch before you exercise. Use good training techniques and form for sports. Have an expert look at your technique.
- Wear protection when playing sports.
- Stay away from doing things that cause pain in your shoulder.
- Take breaks often when doing things that use repeat movements.
- Follow pitch count guidelines if you are a baseball or softball player.
