Repetitive Nerve Stimulation Study

Why is this procedure done?

Repetitive nerve stimulation study is used to test the electrical action of the muscles. The nerves that control your muscles get repeated electrical stimulations. Then, the amount of impulse through the muscle is measured. This will help see if the muscles react the right way to a given stimulus. This test is done using a machine called an oscilloscope. This machine lets the doctor view and study the electrical signals coming from the muscles. ‚

What will the results be?

  • The doctor will look at the results of your test and what is normal. The doctor will know if you have a problem with your muscles.
  • The doctor will talk with you about the results.

What happens before the procedure?

There are no special things to do before the test. ‚

What happens during the procedure?

  • You will lie on a bed or sit on a chair.
  • The staff will clean and shave your skin where the electrodes will be attached. This may be on your upper arms, your chest, your face and nose, and your hands.
  • You may be asked to rest for up to 10 minutes before the test starts.
  • The staff will place electrodes on the skin.
  • The electrodes are hooked to the machine. The machine will check and record the electrical signals in your muscles.
  • Using a computer, the technician will send a small amount of electrical signals through the wires. This will be repeated 3 to 4 times.
  • The technician will remove all the electrodes when the test is done.
  • This test may take 30 minutes to 1 hour.

What happens after the procedure?

  • You may go home right after the test.
  • Ask your doctor when you will get the results.

What care is needed at home?

Use soap and water to clean any sticky spots where the electrodes were on your body. ‚

What follow-up care is needed?

  • Your doctor may ask you to make visits to the office to check on your progress. Be sure to keep these visits.
  • Your doctor may have you see a nervous system doctor if the test results show that you need more tests or care.
