What happens during the procedure?


  • The staff will give you a hospital gown to change into. Remove all jewelry, eyeglasses, and other metal objects.
  • Once in the x-ray room, the staff will help you lie down with your feet in foot holders. Your doctor will put a special tool called a speculum into your vagina. The speculum helps keep your vagina open so the doctor is able to see.
  • Your doctor will put a flexible tube inside your cervix. Your doctor will remove the speculum after placing the tube. Your doctor will fill your womb with a special dye using this tube.
  • A fluoroscopy machine will be over you. The machine will take pictures while the dye goes into the structures inside your uterus and fallopian tubes.
  • When all the pictures are taken, the doctor will remove the tube.
  • The procedure takes about 30 minutes.

What happens after the procedure?


  • You may have some cramping after the procedure.
  • You may go home after the procedure.

What care is needed at home?


  • Ask your doctor what you need to do when you go home. Make sure you ask questions if you do not understand what you need to do.
  • You may wash your vaginal area after the procedure.
  • You can expect dye stains and blood spots from your vagina for a few days. You may use pads but not tampons.

What follow-up care is needed?


  • Your doctor may ask you to make visits to the office to check on your progress. Be sure to keep your visits.
  • Your doctor will tell you when you can get the results. Your doctor will talk about the results with you. The results will help the two of you decide on your next steps.

What problems could happen?


  • Allergic reaction to the dye
  • Crampy pain
