    With mild jaw problems, you may only need appliance therapy or braces with elastics or rubber bands. Appliance therapies work best in younger people while they are growing. In very bad cases or in some adults, jaw surgery may be the only option to fix the problem. ‚

    What care is needed at home?


    • Ask your dentist what you need to do when you go home. Make sure you ask questions if you do not understand what the dentist says. This way you will know what you need to do.
    • You may have trouble swallowing, speaking, and eating at first. You may have more drooling at first.
    • Suck on ice cubes or ice chips to help ease pain.
    • You may want to eat a soft or liquid diet for the first few weeks after the procedure. Cut foods into small pieces and chew slowly. Avoid sticky, hard, or chewy foods.
    • Learn the right way to brush and floss teeth with your appliance. Ask the dentist to show you how. Brush and floss the teeth after each meal. It is important to also use a mouthwash after brushing teeth, especially at night. Ask your dentist about the best kind of tools to help you.
    • Your speech will be different at first. Practice talking, reading, and singing aloud. This will give your mouth practice and your speech will quickly return to normal.

    • Discomfort or jaw pain
    • Food getting stuck in the appliance or in the wires or tubes
    • Lip, cheek, and mouth sores
    • Speech problems
    • Gum sensitivity

    When do I need to call the doctor?


    • You have trouble eating, swallowing, or drinking
    • Any part of your appliance comes off or feels loose
    • You have questions about how to care for your new appliance
