Hemarthrosis is the medical name for bleeding into a joint. A joint is the place where 2 bones meet. When you have bleeding in a joint, the area swells and causes pain. This problem can happen slowly over time or come on all of a sudden. ‚  

What are the causes?


Hemarthrosis may be caused by many things like: ‚  
  • A bleeding problem such as hemophilia
  • An accident
  • Arthritis
  • A tumor
  • Problems with your nerves or blood vessels
  • Taking drugs to prevent blood clotting

What can make this more likely to happen?


Taking a drug to thin your blood raises the chances you will have hemarthroses. ‚  

What are the main signs?


Your joint may become red, swollen, and warm to the touch. You may have problems moving the joint and you may feel a burning pain. ‚  

How does the doctor diagnose this health problem?


Your doctor will take your history and examine your joint. You may need to have: ‚  
  • Lab tests
  • X-rays
  • Ultrasounds

How does the doctor treat this health problem?


Your doctor may use a needle to remove some of the blood and fluid from the joint. Other treatments may include: ‚  
  • Rest
  • Ice
  • Splint or brace

What drugs may be needed?


The doctor may order drugs to: ‚  
  • Help with pain and swelling
  • Prevent infection

Will surgery be needed?


If you have hemarthrosis in the same joint a few times, your doctor may recommend you have surgery to remove the lining of the joint. This may help to prevent more bleeding into your joint in the future. ‚
