What changes to diet are needed?

  • Follow a healthy diet.
  • Eat many different foods rich in nutrients from all food groups.
  • Stay away from sugars and fats. Limit sweets and fatty foods such as candy bars and chips.
  • Limit the amount of fast food your child eats. Fast food tends to be higher in calories, sodium, and fat.
  • Give your child healthy food choices. This will help control what foods your child eats. Do not encourage overeating.
  • Talk to a dietitian for meal planning tips.

Who should use this diet?

Children or adolescents 12 to 18 years of age ‚

What foods are good to eat?

  • Grains: Try to eat at least three servings of whole grain bread, cereals, brown rice, pasta, or crackers each day.
  • Veggies: Eat a lot of veggies. Try to pick many different kinds and colors. Try to eat more fresh or frozen and stay away from canned veggies.
  • Fruits: Eat many different types of fruits, but try to stay away from juice. Fresh or frozen fruit is much better for you than juice.
  • Fats: Use good fats found in fish, nuts, avocados, and oils, like olive oil and canola oil. Cut back on solid fats (butter, lard, margarine).
  • Milk: Choose low fat (1%) or fat free.
  • Meats and beans: Try to eat more low fat or lean meats like chicken and turkey. Eat less red meat and eat more fish and beans instead.
