An orgasm is the feeling of deep sexual pleasure. There is also a release of tension. Some women feel muscle contractions in their genital area when they have an orgasm. When a woman is not able to have an orgasm it is called anorgasmia. ‚
There are many kinds of this disorder. ‚
- You never had an orgasm. This is primary anorgasmia.
- You lose the ability to have an orgasm. This may be due to something like low mood or alcohol use. This is secondary anorgasmia.
- You are able to have an orgasm with one partner, but not other partners. Your orgasm may also be affected by the amount or type of sexual touching you or your partner use before other sexual contact. This is situational anorgasmia.
- You will have an orgasm, but you are not fulfilled. This is random anorgasmia.
What are the causes?
Many things may change your ability to have an orgasm. Some of them are: ‚
Physical problems like: ‚
- Pelvic trauma. This may be from giving birth, female circumcision, or other causes.
- Removal of the uterus or other female surgeries
- Problems from genital surgery
- Spinal cord injury
Emotional problems from: ‚
- A history of sexual abuse or rape
- Stress
- Boredom within a relationship
- Low mood
Medical issues like: ‚
- Problems affecting your spinal cord and brain like multiple sclerosis
- Heart disease, diabetes, or other serious illnesses
- Use of certain drugs taken for low mood or pain
- Overuse of beer, wine, and mixed drinks (alcohol); tobacco; or illegal drugs
- Poor diet and exercise
- Hormone imbalance
How does the doctor diagnose this health problem?
- Your doctor will take your history. Talk to the doctor about all the drugs you are taking. Be sure to include all prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, and herbal supplements. Tell the doctor if you have any drug allergy. Bring a list of drugs you take with you.
- Your doctor will also do a pelvic exam. This will help your doctor look for physical changes that may be causing your problem.
How does the doctor treat this health problem?
Your doctor will treat you based on what is causing your problem. Treatment may include: ‚
- Sex education
- Sex therapy
- Counseling
- Cognitive behavioral therapy
- Couples exercises
- Drugs
- Treatment of other health problems
What lifestyle changes are needed?
- Try to fix conflicts and problems in your relationship. Tension can change your ability to orgasm.
- Try to be open and talk with your partner about your sex needs and desires.
- Talk with your doctor about ways to keep your body and mind healthy.
- Have a healthy outlook towards sex. Learn about what you like and react to during sex.
- Try using adult sex aids. Using a vibrator may help cause an orgasm during sex.
- Increase stimulation during sex. Try other sex positions to help cause an orgasm.
- Use oil or creams to raise your response during sex. Be sure to ask your doctor before trying natural treatments.
