Separated Abdominal Muscle Discharge Instructions

. This muscle has left and right sides. They are connected by a strong fibrous band in the middle. This problem happens if the right and left sides split apart from each other. You may be able to see a ridge running down the middle of the stomach, mainly when trying to sit up. This is not a serious health problem and often goes away on its own. ‚  

What care is needed at home?


Ask your doctor what you need to do when you go home. Make sure you ask questions if you do not understand what the doctor says. This way you will know what you need to do. ‚  
There is not often any care needed at home. Your doctor may tell you to avoid traditional exercises for your stomach. ‚  

What follow-up care is needed?


Your doctor may ask you to make visits to the office to check on your progress. Be sure to keep these visits. ‚  
After a pregnant woman has given birth, she may need to see a PT (physical therapist) to learn safe exercises to help fix this problem. If you develop a health problem called a hernia, your doctor may send you to see a surgeon. ‚  

Will physical activity be limited?


Your activity should not be limited. ‚  

What can be done to prevent this health problem?


Women who are more than 12 weeks pregnant should not do stomach exercises. ‚  

When do I need to call the doctor?


  • If your baby has redness or pain in the stomach area and cries all the time
  • Vomiting that will not stop
  • Health problem is not better or you are feeling worse

Helpful tips


Some exercises for your stomach area, such as sit ups and crunches, can make the problem worse. Talk to your doctor or physical therapist about the right exercises to help. ‚
