Radiculopathy

About this topic

Nerves leave the spine and go out to the body. Sometimes, a nerve is damaged where it leaves the spine. This is called radiculopathy. You may have pain and weakness of your arms or legs. You may also have numbness or tingling. These signs are caused by the nerve being pinched or squeezed. You may notice problems in your neck, face, shoulders, or arms. Other people have problems in the hips, legs, and feet. Sometimes, the pain is in your chest and back. Where you feel these signs on your body will depend on what nerve is hurt. ‚

What are the causes?

Many things can cause pressure on the nerves as they leave the spine. There may be swelling in the area. A nerve may be pressed by muscles, bone, or cartilage. The cushions between the spinal bones may bulge out of place. Then, they press on nerves leaving the spinal column. This is called a herniated disc or a slipped disc. You may also have normal wear and tear of the spine. Bone spurs or arthritis may develop. The spinal canal may become smaller. ‚
