Pterygium

About this topic

The white part of your eye is covered with a clear thin tissue. It is the conjunctiva. Sometimes, a small growth forms on this layer. This is a pterygium. It may happen in one or both eyes. ‚

What are the causes?

The cause of this problem is not known. ‚

What can make this more likely to happen?

You are more likely to have this problem if you are an adult man. Working around chemicals raises your chances. Living near the equator or having a job outdoors, like a farmer or fisherman, also puts you at a higher risk. People who are often outdoors in sunny, windy, dusty, or sandy areas more often have this eye problem. ‚

What are the main signs?

  • Raised white tissue in the eye with visible blood vessels. It is often on the inner or outer edge of the white part and is shaped like a triangle.
  • You may feel like there is something in your eye.
  • It may become irritated and itch or burn.
  • A large pterygium may block your eyesight.

How does the doctor diagnose this health problem?

Your doctor should be able to tell what the problem is just by looking at the eye. The doctor may order more tests to see if you have any problems with your eyesight. ‚

How does the doctor treat this health problem?

No treatment is needed unless it blocks your eyesight or causes problems. Very large pterygium may need surgery. ‚

What drugs may be needed?

The doctor may order drugs to: ‚
  • Keep your eye moist
  • Help with pain and swelling
  • Prevent infection
  • Keep the pterygium from returning

Will physical activity be limited?

Your physical activity should not be limited with this problem. If you have surgery, your doctor may limit your activity for a short time while you heal. ‚

What problems could happen?

  • Growth can come back
  • Blurred eyesight

What can be done to prevent this health problem?

Use eye protection or sunglasses when in sunny, windy, sandy, or dusty conditions. ‚
