Pap Test

Why is this procedure done?

The uterus is the organ where a baby grows when you are pregnant. The uterus is also called the womb. The opening from the birth canal to the womb is called the cervix. Doctors use a Pap test to look at the cells of your cervix. A Pap test is done to look for: ‚
  • Cancer cells
  • Cells that are not normal and may lead to cancer
  • Changes in your cervix
  • Swelling or infections

You should begin having Pap tests at the age of 21. You will need to have a Pap test every 3 to 5 years. Talk to your doctor about how often you need to have your test done. If you have had your uterus taken out, you may not need to have Pap tests. Ask your doctor. ‚

What will the results be?

A Pap test can show if the cells in your cervix are normal or not normal. If cervical changes are found early, they may be treated before they get worse. ‚

What happens before the procedure?

Your doctor will take your history. Talk to the doctor about: ‚
  • All the drugs you are taking. Be sure to include all prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, and herbal supplements. Tell the doctor about any drug allergy. Bring a list of drugs you take with you. Ask about what drugs you should or should not take.
  • If you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant.
  • If you have your menstrual period
  • If you are sexually active

Be sure to let the doctor know if you have a history of an abnormal Pap test before. Also, tell the doctor about: ‚
  • Past cervical procedures
  • Human papillomavirus or other sexually-transmitted diseases
  • Vaginal secretions and infections
  • Past surgery, radiation, or chemo

What happens during the procedure?

  • You will lie on an exam table and put your feet in foot holders.
  • Your doctor will put a special tool called a speculum into your vagina. The speculum helps keep your vagina open so the doctor is able to see.
  • Another special tool is used to collect cells from your cervix.
  • Your doctor will remove the speculum. The cells are sent to the lab for testing.
  • The doctor may do a pelvic exam after the test.
  • The procedure may take less than 5 minutes.

What happens after the procedure?

You can go home right after the test. ‚

What care is needed at home?

You can go back to your normal activities after the procedure. ‚

What follow-up care is needed?

  • Your doctor may ask you to make visits to the office to check on your progress. Be sure to keep your visits.
  • Call your doctor if you have not heard about your test results after 3 weeks.

What problems could happen?

A Pap test does not cause any harm to your health. ‚
