What are the causes?


The cause of osteochondritis dissecans is not known. ‚  

What can make this more likely to happen?


This illness is more likely to happen in young men, especially if they have had an injury to a joint. Athletes, like gymnasts and baseball players, are more likely to have this problem. ‚  

What are the main signs?


  • Joint pain
  • Not able to straighten your arm or leg all the way
  • Swelling
  • Stiffness
  • Joint locking or sticking
  • Clicking sound when moving joint

How does the doctor diagnose this health problem?


Your doctor will feel around your painful joint. Your doctor will put your arm or leg in a few positions and push or pull on different areas to check your motion and strength. The doctor may order: ‚  
  • X-ray
  • CT or MRI scan

How does the doctor treat this health problem?


If the loose piece is floating in the joint, you may need surgery to take it out. Most often, the doctor can do this with a scope. This is called arthroscopic surgery. Whether or not you have surgery, your doctor may suggest: ‚  
  • Rest
  • Ice
  • Brace or splint
  • Crutches to take the pressure off the joint if the problem is in your leg
  • Compression
  • Exercises
  • Physical therapy (PT)

What drugs may be needed?


The doctor may order drugs to: ‚  
  • Help with pain and swelling
  • Fight an infection

What problems could happen?


You are more likely to get arthritis in the joint where you have this problem. ‚
