Myositis Ossificans Discharge Instructions

Myositis ossificans happens when bone grows in a place that it would not normally grow. Doctors do not know why bone cells appear where they should not be. This illness goes by a few names. Sometimes, it is called MO. Other times you may hear it referred to as heterotopic ossification, or HO. This disease may happen after a muscle is bruised. It may also happen after a person has an injury to the nervous system. Sometimes, this is a disease you inherit from your parents. ‚  

What care is needed at home?


  • Ask your doctor what you need to do when you go home. Make sure you ask questions if you do not understand what the doctor says. This way you will know what you need to do.
  • Rest. Avoid doing things that make the problem worse.
  • Place an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a towel over the painful part. Never put ice right on the skin. Do not leave the ice on more than 10 to 15 minutes at a time.
  • Prop your injured part on pillows to help with swelling.
  • Lightly wrap a compression bandage around the injured area to lessen swelling.
  • Wear a brace or immobilizer if your doctor wants you to keep your injured body part from moving.

What follow-up care is needed?


  • Your doctor may ask you to make visits to the office to check on your progress. Be sure to keep these visits. You may need an x-ray every so often to check if the bone is growing more.
  • Your doctor may send you to physical therapy (PT) for treatments to lessen pain and swelling and to learn gentle stretching exercises.
  • If you do not get better with treatments, your doctor may send you to see an orthopedic surgeon.

What drugs may be needed?


The doctor may order drugs to: ‚  
  • Help with pain and swelling

Will physical activity be limited?


You may need to rest for 3 to 4 weeks. You should not do physical activity that makes your health problem worse. Talk to your doctor if you run, work out, or play sports. You may not be able to do those things until your health problem gets better. When your doctor tells you to return to activity, you will need to do it slowly. ‚  

What can be done to prevent this health problem?


  • Start rehab slowly and gently after an injury.
  • Do not return to training too soon after an injury.
  • Avoid intense massage to an injured muscle.
  • If you get a bruise or injury, rest and use ice, compression, and elevation right away.

When do I need to call the doctor?


  • You cannot move a joint as well as you could
  • Health problem is not better or you are feeling worse
