Myelography

for this procedure. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to dye or shellfish.
  • Your doctor will do an exam and may order:
    • X-rays
    • CT or MRI scan
  • You will not be allowed to drive right away after the procedure. Ask a family member or a friend to drive you home.
  • Ask someone to be with you at home for the rest of the day.

  • What happens during the procedure?

    • You will lie on your side with your knees pulled up to your chest or facing downward. Sometimes, you will be asked to sit on an exam table and lean over your head on a pillow.
    • Your doctor will clean and numb your lower back.
    • Your doctor will put a very small plastic tube into the lower part of your back in a place that is not near the nerves of your spinal cord. A small amount of spinal fluid will be taken and sent to the lab for testing.
    • The dye will be given through the tube. The x-ray or CT machine takes pictures when the dye passes through your back.
    • While pictures are taken, you will lie on your stomach on an exam table. You will hold your breath and stay very still for a few seconds while the machine takes pictures. The exam table will be moved and adjusted.
    • When the test is over, the doctor will remove the plastic tube. Your doctor will clean the back where the tube was and cover it with clean bandages.
    • The procedure takes about 1 hour.

    What happens after the procedure?

    • The test results may be available within a couple of hours. Other test results sent out to labs may take a few days to weeks. The result will depend on the reason why the test was taken.
    • You can go home if you show no side effects, can pass urine, and are able to walk safely. In some cases, you may need to stay in the hospital based on the test results.

What care is needed at home?

    • Stay in bed for 12 hours. Keep your head raised.
    • Drink lots of fluids to help flush the dye out of your body and avoid fluid loss.
    • You can take the bandage off of your back the next day.
    • You can go back to your normal diet and activities after the procedure.
    • If any drugs have been stopped for the test, ask your doctor when you can start taking them again.

    What follow-up care is needed?

    • Your doctor may ask you to make visits to the office to check on your progress. Be sure to keep these visits.
    • The results will help your doctor understand what kind of health problem you have. Together you can make a plan for more care.
