Moderate Sedation

Moderate sedation is also known as conscious sedation. It changes a persons state of being awake. This is also called consciousness. With this, you only feel slight pain during a minor procedure. You will be relaxed and may seem to sleep. It will be easy to wake you. You may talk and answer questions while sedated. Most likely, you will not remember it once it is over. ‚  
Moderate sedation is given by someone with special training. This is someone like a: ‚  
  • Certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA)
  • Anesthesiologist
  • Doctor
  • Dentist
  • Oral surgeon

You may need conscious sedation if you are at the hospital or in the dentist's office. Sometimes it is given at the doctor's office or an outpatient clinic. The staff carefully watches you during and after the procedure. ‚  

Why is this procedure done?


This type of sedation is most often given for: ‚  
  • Breast tissue samples
  • Colonoscopy
  • Vasectomy
  • Dental surgery like an implant or taking out an impacted tooth
  • Minor foot surgery
  • Endoscopy
  • Fix a broken bone
  • Plastic cosmetic surgery
  • Endotracheal procedure

What happens after the procedure?


You may feel these side effects: ‚  
  • Headache
  • Upset stomach or throwing up
  • Hangover feeling
  • Short period of no memory
  • Bad memories

What care is needed at home?


Do not make major decisions or sign important papers for at least 24 hours. You may not be thinking clearly. ‚  

What problems could happen?


  • Low blood pressure
  • Breathing problems
