Medical Screenings for Newborns

. This can lead to cataracts, liver problems, and mental retardation.
  • Biotinidase deficiency ¢ ˆ ’ When your baby's body lacks vitamin B, or biotin. This may cause seizures, poor muscle control, weak immune system, or mental retardation.
  • Cystic fibrosis ¢ ˆ ’ This is mostly a lung problem. Your baby would have lung infections from mucus and other fluids that build up in the lungs. Your baby may also have other problems.
  • Congenital hyperthyroidism ¢ ˆ ’ Your baby may have a growth on the thyroid gland. This may lead to problems with growth and mental retardation
  • Congenital adrenal hyperplasia ¢ ˆ ’ Your baby may not be able to make a normal amount of hormones. These are needed for sexual and physical growth.
  • Sickle cell anemia ¢ ˆ ’ This is an inherited blood illness that affects the red blood cells.
  • Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency or G6PD ¢ ˆ ’ Your baby may have low levels of G6PD. Your baby needs G6PD to make red blood cells work the right way.

  • Hearing Tests ‚
Some babies are born with hearing problems. Doctors will do a newborn hearing test to make sure that your baby does not have any hearing problems. Sometimes the doctor will want to do a hearing test if your baby is not reacting to sounds or noises. You can take steps to help your baby communicate with you and others if your baby has a hearing problem. If you don't know about your baby's hearing problem, it can affect your baby's speech. When you don't know about your baby's hearing loss, it can affect your baby's speech. ‚
There are two different tests used to screen hearing loss in babies. These are: ‚
    • Otacoustic emissions ¢ ˆ ’ Measures the sound wave (echo) response inside the ear. A small earphone will be placed in your baby's ear canal.
    • Auditory brainstem response ¢ ˆ ’ Measures how hearing nerves react to the sound. An earphone is used in your baby's ear. An electrode is also placed on your baby's head. Your baby needs to be sleeping for this test.

Your baby may need to be tested again a few weeks after birth if: ‚
    • There is a problem with the blood sample
    • The first test shows a likely health problem
    • Your hospital always does a second test on all babies

If your baby needs to be tested again, bring your baby in right away to get it done. ‚
    Additional Tests ‚
Your baby may need more tests if: ‚
    • You have a health problem that runs in the family
    • You have an older child who has a defect or health problem
    • A baby or babies in your family have died due to a health problem
    • You think your baby may be at risk for certain health problem
