Interceptive Orthodontics

About this topic

Some children and even adults may need orthodontics or dental braces. These can change your smile at any age. But, there is an ideal time to start treating some problems in your mouth. When your child has a mixture of baby and permanent teeth, the dentist may use interceptive orthodontics. These appliances may help the permanent teeth erupt in your childs mouth in the right place. ‚
Orthodontists are dentists who are experts in making crooked teeth straight. They also work to make your teeth line up the right way in your smile and your bite. Most often, they will want to start treatment as soon as there is a sign of a problem with how the teeth line up. This is often by the time your child is 7 years old. If you start treatment early in life, you may have fewer serious problems later on. ‚
Interceptive orthodontics may help to: ‚
  • Spread out teeth that are too crowded. This can help make room for new teeth.
  • Keep face and jaws growing at the same rate
  • Lower the amount of teeth that may need to be pulled in the future
  • Lessen the amount of time spent in braces
  • Help lips, teeth, or jaws to line up the right way
  • Move teeth that protrude to keep them safe from injury
  • Correct gum problems like recession

Your normal dentist may suggest you see an orthodontist to learn if your child may be helped by interceptive orthodontics. ‚

What will the results be?

  • Interceptive orthodontics can change how your child looks. They can also change how the teeth and jaw work. Your child will have straighter teeth that work well.
  • Your childs remaining permanent teeth will have a better chance of coming in straight.
