Hypnosis may be used as a way to help you relax. It may also help you have more focus and concentration. It is a trance-like state that lasts for a short time. Doctors may use it to treat health or mental problems. ‚  

General


Hypnosis is a state of altered alertness. Your attention becomes very focused. You are in a highly relaxed state. Most often, a trained expert, or hypnotherapist, will help you become hypnotized. Some people learn to hypnotize themselves. ‚  
When you are hypnotized, your conscious mind is quiet. Your unconscious mind is open to suggestions that may help your health. You are able to focus very strongly on a certain thought or belief. At the same time, you are able to block out distractions. When you are hypnotized, you know what is being said and done. You do not do things that are against your will. Instead, it can help you gain control over your thoughts, feelings, and actions. ‚  
You may be led into a state of hypnosis as the therapist talks in gentle tones. The therapist may talk about images and scenes that are calming and make you feel safe. This will help you relax all the way. Then, the therapist may suggest ways to achieve your goals. You may also see images in your mind of you completing your goals. When the session is over, your therapist will help you end your trance-like state. ‚  
Doctors may use hypnosis to treat pain or ease fears and worry. Other times, it may be used before surgery or other procedures to decrease anxiety. Hypnosis may be used to treat conditions like eating disorders, headaches, asthma, sleeping problems, phobias, or addictions. It can also be used during labor and delivery. ‚  
Hypnosis is safe when done by a trained therapist or health care provider. Side effects are rare, but may include: ‚  
  • Drowsiness
  • Headache
  • Anxiety or stress
  • Strong emotions or false memories when reliving earlier events in your life
