What problems could happen?

  • The lift could tip.
  • The patient could fall from the sling if it is not positioned in the right way.

Helpful tips

  • Explain what you are doing and reassure the patient as you lift and lower them.
  • If possible, use 2 people to move a person with a lift.
  • You may be able to make the base of the lift wider or more narrow to get it to fit around a chair or bed.
  • Always lock the brakes on the lift before raising or lowering the patient.
  • There are a variety of slings that may be helpful. They make ones that are waterproof, ones for overweight people, and ones with openings for easier toileting. They also have some that have higher backs for more support.
