How to Do Chest PT

as they breathe out hard. You may also need to stop and cough during chest PT.
  • You will need to sit up in a chair, leaning back slightly against a pillow behind your back. Your caregiver will stand behind you and clap the front of your chest above the breast to the shoulders on both sides.
  • Next, turn around and face the back of the chair. Lean forward slightly, using a pillow and the back of the chair to support your chest. Your caregiver should stand facing your back. This time, your caregiver will clap on both sides of your back, over your shoulder blades. This is the upper half of your back.
  • The rest of the positions are done lying down. Use pillows to try and keep your chest and head lower than the rest of your body if possible.
    • Lie on your stomach with pillows under your chest and stomach. Your caregiver will clap on both sides of your back from your shoulder blades to the bottom of your ribs. This is the middle of your back.
    • Turn on your right side. Have the pillows under your hips and between your knees. Put your left arm above your head. Your caregiver will clap on the left side of your chest from your armpit to the bottom of your ribs.
    • Turn on your left side. Have the pillows under your hips and between your knees. Put your right arm above your head. Your caregiver will clap on the right side of your chest from your armpit to the bottom of your ribs.

    Helpful tips


    • Do not do chest PT on bare skin. Always cover the skin with a thin cloth.
    • The person doing the chest PT should take off rings, watches, and bracelets.
    • It may sound like a horse galloping as you do chest PT. If it sounds like slapping, your caregiver should cup the hands more.
    • Do not do chest PT over the backbone, belly, or breasts.
    • It should not hurt to have chest PT done if it is done the right way.
    • Morning and before bedtime are good times to do chest PT. Do not do it right after eating. Chest PT may cause throwing up.
