Hot flashes are sudden intense feelings of heat. They often start in the upper body and move up to the face. Most hot flashes go away within a few minutes. You can have a hot flash at any time of day or night. ‚  
Hot flashes most often happen when a woman is getting near menopause. But, not all women have hot flashes. ‚  

What are the causes?


The exact cause of hot flashes is not known. One thought is hormone levels in the body may change. These can affect the part of the body that controls temperature. ‚  

What can make this more likely to happen?


Women are more likely to have this problem if they are overweight or do not exercise very much. Smoking raises the risk for hot flashes. So does being of African-American heritage. ‚  

What are the main signs?


  • Feeling of heat that spreads through the chest, neck, and especially the face
  • Red and spotty skin
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Sweating
  • Feeling cold after the hot flash
