Hemangioma

About this topic

A hemangioma is an abnormal group of blood vessels in the skin or in organs. Some babies are born with them. Others develop them in the first few months of life. Most hemangiomas are on the face or neck. They may keep growing for up to 18 months. After that time, they often start to get smaller. Most small hemangiomas will go away on their own by the time a child is about 10 years old. ‚
Hemangiomas can grow on the skin or inside the body on the organs and tissues. There are three main types of hemangiomas: ‚
  • On the top layer of skin. This is a superficial hemangioma.
  • In the deep layers of skin. This is a deep hemangioma.
  • One that involves both top and deep layers of skin. This is a compound hemangioma.

What are the causes?

The cause of hemangiomas is not known. ‚

What are the main signs?

  • Red or reddish-purple raised or flat area on the skin
  • A large, raised growth with blood vessels that can be seen. This may feel spongy.
  • Bluish swollen area under the skin

How does the doctor diagnose this health problem?

Your doctor will do an exam. The doctor will look at the area where it is seen. ‚

How does the doctor treat this health problem?

Most hemangiomas may not need to be treated. The doctor will watch it as your child grows. If there is bleeding, or it gets sore and infected, treatment may be needed. ‚

Are there other health problems to treat?

Often there are no other problems to treat, unless the hemangioma is in a place that may cause problems. When hemangiomas are inside the body, they can cause more problems. If it is in the head, there may be breathing problems. Ones on the eyelid, near the ear, or in the mouth may cause problems if they grow a lot. ‚

What drugs may be needed?

The doctor may order drugs to: ‚
  • Help with swelling
  • Affect the immune system

The doctor may give your child a shot of a drug called a corticosteroid. This will help with swelling. Talk with your doctor about the risks of this shot. In some cases, the doctor will want to remove the hemangioma with surgery or do a laser treatment to make it less visible. ‚

What problems could happen?

  • Bleeding
  • Scarring
  • Infection
  • Problems with seeing, hearing, or speech
  • Breathing problems
  • Eating problems
  • Skin changes
  • Psychological problems from how the hemangioma looks

What can be done to prevent this health problem?
