Going Up and Down Curbs or Stairs With a Walker or Crutches

Strong leg goes up first and "Weak leg goes down first. " The exception is when you cant put any weight on your leg or if you are using a walker. Do not try to climb stairs with your walker.
  • It is hard to tell how much weight to put on your leg when you are only allowed to bear a certain amount of weight. It is better to put less weight on your leg rather than more weight if you are not sure. Make sure you ask your doctor to show you how much weight you can put on your leg.
  • Do not cheat and put more weight on your leg that you are supposed to, even if you are feeling better. Putting too much weight down on your leg may slow the healing process and cause injury.
  • If you are having trouble keeping the right amount of weight on your leg, tell your doctor right away. Your doctor may need to send you to therapy or get another kind of device to help you move about safely.

  • Where can I learn more?
