Fibrinogen Blood Test

Why is this procedure done?

This test is done to find out how much fibrinogen is in your blood. Fibrinogen is a protein made by your liver. It is also known as Factor I. When you are injured, your body tries to stop the bleeding by making a blood clot. Your body needs fibrinogen, other clotting factors, and platelets to make blood clots. After your body makes a blood clot, it stays in place until the injured area is healed. ‚
If you do not have enough fibrinogen or have too much fibrinogen, you could have serious health problems. The doctor may order a fibrinogen level to: ‚
  • Check for bleeding problems
  • See how well treatment is working
  • Find out if you have a bleeding illness
  • Check on other health problems
  • Go along with other tests like a PT, PTT, D-dimer, and platelet function tests

  • If the results are not normal, you may have an illness.
    • Low levels of fibrinogen may mean your body has problems making blood clots.
    • High levels of fibrinogen may mean you are more likely to make more clots than your body needs.
