Fever of unknown origin is a high temperature without a known cause. It is sometimes called FUO. You may have FUO if you have: ‚  
  • Temperature higher than 100.4 ‚ °F or 38 ‚ °C on many occasions. This can be all the time or on and off.
  • Have had a fever for over 3 weeks
  • No clear reason for your fever

What are the causes?


There is no single cause of FUO. Here are some of the possible causes: ‚  
  • Infection
  • Cancer
  • Illnesses of the connective tissue
  • Hormone problems
  • Certain drugs

How does the doctor diagnose this health problem?


Your doctor will do an exam and may order: ‚  
  • Blood tests
  • X-ray
  • Ultrasound
  • CT or MRI scan
  • Positron emission tomography (PET)
  • Biopsy

How does the doctor treat this health problem?


The doctor will treat your FUO based on what is causing it. You may be asked to stop or start certain drugs. Talk with your doctor about what kind of care you will need. ‚  
In some cases, surgery may be an option, based on the cause of your fever. Your doctor will tell you if you need to have surgery. ‚
