Fetal Blood Transfusion

Why is this procedure done?

The baby in your womb has a very low blood count. This could be a very bad problem that might harm your baby. This procedure helps bring your babys blood count back to normal. Sometimes, a baby needs a transfusion because the mother and baby have different blood types. Other times, the mother might have an infection that causes the baby to have a low blood count. ‚

What will the results be?

  • Treatment of problems caused by the babys low blood count
  • Your baby will be born close to term.

What happens before the procedure?

Your doctor may order: ‚
  • Amniotic fluid tests
  • Blood samples from the umbilical cord
  • Ultrasound

What happens during the procedure?

The doctor will give drugs to help pain and to help your muscles relax. The doctor will also give you a drug to numb your belly. There are two types of this procedure. ‚
  • Intravascular transfusion (IVT) ¢ ˆ ’ A needle is put through the mothers belly into the baby's umbilical cord. This is the usual way.
  • Intraperitoneal transfusion (IPT) ¢ ˆ ’ A needle is put through the mother's belly into the baby's belly. IPT is done only if there is a problem in the position of the baby in the womb.

The doctor will use an ultrasound scan to check the position of the baby. It will also guide the doctor to the safe place to put the needle. The blood is transferred to the baby. The doctor will take a final blood test and the needle is removed. The whole process takes from 10 to 40 minutes. ‚

What happens after the procedure?

The doctor may let you go home after the procedure. Sometimes, you may need to stay in the hospital so the staff can watch you and your baby with care. ‚

What care is needed at home?

Your doctor will give you drugs to prevent infection and early labor. Be sure to follow all your doctors orders to avoid problems. ‚

What follow-up care is needed?

Your baby may need to have blood transfusions every 2 to 4 weeks. Ask your doctor how often your baby will need to get blood. ‚

What problems could happen?

Some problems for the mother and baby may be: ‚
  • Need for C-section due to problems with the baby like bleeding, stress, or very low heart rate
  • Early labor
  • Bruising or pain of your belly
  • Infection
  • Your water bag might break
  • Giving too much blood
