Cardiac Blood Pool Scan

for this procedure. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to dye or shellfish.
  • Your doctor will do an exam and may order:
    • Lab tests
    • Electrocardiogram (ECG)

  • What happens during the procedure?


    • Once you are in the procedure room, the staff will put an I.V. in your arm. This will be used to give you the special dye.
    • The staff will attach small, sticky patches on your chest. These are called electrodes. They are connected to a machine.
    • The staff will help you lie on a bed with a special camera on top of it. Stay still and quiet during the test.
    • The doctor will take pictures of your heart.
    • If the doctor only ordered a resting cardiac blood pool scan, this will be the end of the test. This test may take only 30 minutes.
    • If the doctor ordered a stress cardiac blood pool scan, the staff will help you move to another exam bed. This bed has pedals at the end.
    • You will lie down and pedal, as if you are riding on a bicycle.
    • The doctor will take pictures of your heart during this activity.
    • This test may take 1 hour.

    What happens after the procedure?


    You may go home after the procedure. ‚  

    What care is needed at home?


    • You may go back to your normal activities after the procedure.
    • Drink lots of water to flush the dye out of your body. Wash your hands after using the toilet.

    What follow-up care is needed?


    Your doctor may ask you to make visits to the office to check on your progress. Be sure to keep these visits. Talk to your doctor about when the results will be available. ‚  

    What problems could happen?


    Contrast dye may have bad effects on people with kidney problems. ‚
