Bladder Irritants


About this topic


Some foods and drinks may irritate your bladder. These may make your interstitial cystitis or incontinence worse. They may also make other bladder problems worse. ‚  
There are a lot of things on this list. However, it does not mean that you may never have these foods or drinks. Limiting them to small amounts may help make your bladder problems better. Start by taking away 1 or 2 things on the list and see if it helps. If needed, limit or take away other things to help you feel better. ‚  

General


These things may irritate your bladder: ‚  
  • Beer, wine, and mixed drinks (alcohol)
  • Carbonated drinks
  • Chocolate
  • Food additives including MSG
  • Fruits, including:
    • Apples
    • Bananas
    • Cantaloupes
    • Citrus fruits
    • Cranberries
    • Canned figs
    • Grapes
    • Guava
    • Peaches
    • Pineapple
    • Plums
    • Prunes
    • Raisins
    • Strawberries
  • Fruit juices, including:
    • Apple
    • Cranberry
    • Grape
    • Grapefruit
    • Lemon
    • Lime
    • Mango
    • Orange
    • Pineapple
  • Drinks with or without caffeine, including:
    • Coffee
    • Teas, including herbal teas
    • Dark sodas
    • Carbonated drinks
  • Legumes, including:
    • Fava beans
    • Lentils
    • Lima beans
    • Soybeans and other soy products, including soy sauce and tofu
  • Mayonnaise
  • Meats that are smoked, cured, and processed, including:
    • Corned beef
    • Pickled herring
    • Hot dogs
    • Bologna
    • Ham
  • Milk products, including:
    • Aged cheese
    • Cottage cheese
    • Ice cream
    • Milk
    • Sour cream
    • Yogurt
  • Nuts, except for almonds, cashews, and pine nuts
  • Onions, especially when eaten raw
  • Rye and sourdough breads
  • Spicy foods, including Cajun, Mexican, Thai, Indian, and Southwest foods
  • Sweeteners and artificial sweeteners, including:
    • Sugar
    • Honey
    • Fructose
    • Lactose
    • Sucrose
    • Corn sweeteners
    • Aspartame
    • NutraSweet
  • Tomatoes, tomato products and sauces, including pasta or pizza sauces
  • Tobacco
  • Vinegar
  • Salad dressings made with lemon and vinegar
  • Condiments made with lemon and vinegar, such as mustard and ketchup
  • Over-the-counter drugs that contain caffeine or vitamin C, such as multivitamins

These things do not irritate your bladder: ‚  
  • Almonds, cashews, and pine nuts
  • Blueberries, pears
  • Acid-free Kava or highly roasted coffee
  • Onions that are cooked
  • Low acid fruit juices
  • Low acid tomatoes like red heirloom and yellow tomatoes
  • Low acid tomato products
  • White chocolate
  • Processed cheese, such as American cheese

Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water each day. ‚
