Total Protein and A/G Ratio Test

Why is this procedure done?

Proteins are found in all body cells and tissues. You need protein to help with normal growth. It also helps with wound healing and fighting infection. A total protein test measures the total amount of two proteins in your blood. These are albumin and globulin. Albumin helps fluid stay inside your blood vessels. Globulin is important for a healthy immune system. There is more albumin in your blood than globulin. This is called the A/G ratio. The ratio of albumin to globulins gives clues about why test results are abnormal. ‚
The doctor may order this test to: ‚
  • Decide if you have problems with nutrition
  • Help diagnose kidney or liver disease or other illnesses
  • Learn more about swelling in your ankles or belly
  • Check for fluid in the lungs
  • Look at your risk for infection
  • Go along with your routine physical
