Tips to Help You Worry Less

I am worried I will lose my job. " Your actions may be to work hard, finish your projects on time, and volunteer for new tasks.
  • Be aware that some situations are out of your control. Accept that there is nothing that you can do and focus on trying to create something positive from a negative situation.
  • Learn to live with some uncertainty.
    • Accept that you will never be able to know everything about what might happen. Worry does not change the future.
    • Thinking about what could go wrong does not stop it from happening. Instead, try to focus on the present and what is going well.
  • Take control of your mind and body.
    • Learn to meditate. Even a few minutes of slow breathing can calm your mind.
    • Exercise gets your blood flowing. It may help you manage your stress and worry. It can also release chemicals that can improve your mood.
    • Keep your hands busy. Learn to knit, draw, doodle, or work with wood or clay.
    • Spend time away from your computer and the television. Instead, talk to people, read a book, or go for a walk.
  • Look for activities to distract you if you find yourself worrying.
    • Look for ways to help others. If you are focused on some other person, it can change how you view your own concerns.
    • Choose a task you can finish and feel good about. You may want to clean out a closet or a drawer. Try a new recipe.
    • Get in touch with others. Call a friend. Write a letter. Find out how you can volunteer where you live.
  • Seek professional help.
    • Talk about your worries with your medical doctor. Your doctor may suggest different treatments to help you.
    • Talking to a counselor may help you cope with your problems and lessen your worry.
  • Make healthy choices.
    • Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and smoking. These things can make you more nervous.
