T3 Tests

Why is this procedure done?

T3 is short for triiodothyronine. It is one of 2 major hormones made by your thyroid gland. The other hormone is thyroxine or T4. Your body may use too much or too little energy based on how much of these hormones are in your body. ‚
One kind of T3 test can look at the total amount of T3 you have in your body. This is a Total T3. Another kind of T3 test looks at the amount of T3 that is not bound to protein. This is a Free T3. Your doctor may order T3 tests to: ‚
  • See if you have a problem with your thyroid, which is the small gland in the front of your lower neck
  • Know if you are getting the right dose of thyroid replacement drugs
  • Find out why you may have trouble getting pregnant
  • Go along with other thyroid tests

  • If the results are not normal, you may have a problem with your thyroid.
